In the spring of 2023, I took a screenwriting practicum where we spent the semester building a compelling story in proper screenplay format.
What did I learn?
This project was exciting for me because I have never written like this before! Until this point, I have written creative stories, hard news articles, editorials, blog posts, and technical writing pieces.
With screenwriting, it combines the technical aspect of hard news pieces, yet the creativity of short stories. This course pushed me to use my writing in a new medium, and learn more about screenwriting as a career.
My screenplay follows Ben Arthur, a rookie detective for the San Diego Police Department. Arthur is eager to prove his worth to the team, and especially to his parter, John Sprout, who has been on the force for years.
When Detective Arthur and Detective Sprout are assigned to the case of May Taylor, a best-selling author who dies unexpectedly, Arthur is hit with waves of anxiety. Is this his chance to prove himself? Or will he let lies and drama get the best of him?
This story follows what happens when you trust the wrong people in an attempt to prove yourself. Can Detective Arthur find how May Taylor dies, or will he always just be the rookie?
